Iran (06/24/2009)

I first posted this on my personal journal on June 24, 2009.

I know, you guys might get sick of it...and to a point I am as well. But I think it is vital to pass this information on because we, the world, need to know what is going on in this country that is being blocked by normal journalistic means.

35+ reporters have been arrested or disappeared. One from Washington Times. A person who has been forwarding information and videos from Iran to Nico has posted on their facebook that the Basij came to his house looking for him and his life is in danger.

We need to continue to spread these videos and pictures around to show the Iranian government that we still care about these people and will not stop caring about them. Neda is just one of hundreds of people who have their lost their lives dying for something that we hold inalienable and take for granted. Movements are happening from within the government as well, Mullahs have joined the protests, some of the state media - while the rest call the protesters terrorists, hoodlums, vagrants, mobs, thugs and have 'confessions' of them being influenced by the US, UK and Western govts being broadcasted out - are starting to rebel and report on crimes committed by the Basij and others against the protesters.

Things are changing but it will take time. It took a year for the Iranian revolution to come to a conclusion the last time and that was considered one of the fastest done.

Four of the footballers who were the green bands during the world cup have been banned from football for life. Their careers are finished. Thousands of people have been captured and taken to prison with no one being informed, they just disappear, and there are reports of torture being done.

The moment we stop to care, stop to share, stop to honor these people, it will all be over. We have to keep this momentum alive because we keep them and their dream alive.

These videos and pictures are the only way we can know that these citizen reporters are still alive and what is going on in this country.

Wyclef Jean wrote a song for the Iranian people. It is beautiful and moving.

Tuesday June 23rd protests
This poor guy can't find a good picture. But it's interesting in how many people, even though, not explicitly, are supporting the protesters.

Why is it that my audio on some of these keeps cutting out?

Cleric, whose loyalty only belongs to God and the Ayatollah, join the protesters
When the protests began, Iranian students for the most part, especially women were visible and in the lead.

Their numbers dwindled over time. Some blame police and militia crackdown and intimidation.

Social networks swelled with amateur video showing protesters beaten or shot at. Their screams of pain and even death were caught on tape by fellow protesters using mainly cell phone cameras.

Throughout all that, some clerics of the Islamic Republic have spoken up against the stifling of people's right to voice their opinion and in support of new elections.

On his Web site, Grand Ayatollah Hussein Ali Montazeri described government efforts to crackdown on the protests as threatening the legitimacy of the Islamic Republic because it was no longer representing all the people.

Moussavi ally and former president Mohammad Khatami also said in a statement that to "protest in a civil manner... is the definite right of the people and all must respect that."
